VA health care

VA health care enrollment and disability compensation are separate processes. Some veterans qualify for health care without a service-connected disability rating. Service history, discharge, exposures, income, and other criteria may affect eligibility and priority.

Check VA health care eligibility and apply through the official process. Do not assume that not having a disability award means you cannot enroll.

VA home loans

The home loan benefit can be used by eligible veterans and service members without a disability rating. Disability compensation may matter for a funding-fee exemption. A COE and a lender review are still needed.

Benefits for spouses and children

CHAMPVA may help eligible spouses, dependent children, and survivors with health coverage costs. One eligibility route involves a veteran who is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability. Eligibility for TRICARE affects whether CHAMPVA is available.

Dependents’ Educational Assistance, also called Chapter 35, may support education or training for qualifying spouses and children. A 100% rating alone is not a complete eligibility determination. Review the award status and the specific program’s rules.

State and local benefits

Property-tax relief, tuition programs, licenses, and other benefits vary by state and sometimes by county. Requirements may include residency, a particular disability status, income limits, or an application deadline.

Before planning around a benefit, confirm it with the state veterans agency or the office that administers it. A general national checklist cannot establish that a household qualifies.
