VA disability calculator

Your ratings. Your benefits. A clearer picture.

✓   Official 2026 pay rates

How to use this calculator

Enter the percentage for each individual VA disability rating, then add any qualifying dependents to estimate your combined rating and monthly compensation. Condition names are optional—use “ringing in ears” instead of “tinnitus,” or leave the name blank. The calculation uses your percentages and body locations, not the wording.

For disabilities affecting both arms or both legs, select the correct left or right body location for each rating. The calculator automatically checks and applies the bilateral factor when applicable.

VA math explained: why your ratings don’t add up

VA combines ratings against your remaining efficiency, rather than adding the percentages. That is why two 50% ratings produce an 80% combined rating.

A few common questions

Why don’t my disability ratings add up?

VA combines ratings against remaining efficiency. Two 50% ratings combine to 75%, which rounds to an 80% rating. Read our step-by-step explanation of VA math.

Does this calculator tell me what rating I qualify for?

No. It combines the individual percentages you enter. It does not diagnose conditions, determine service connection, or predict what VA will award. Use your decision letter for current ratings and treat hypothetical changes as scenarios.

Does a 100% rating mean permanent and total?

Not automatically. A permanent-and-total finding is a separate determination. The calculator cannot establish that status. Review your VA award documents and ask an accredited representative if you are unsure.

Do I have to provide my name or medical records?

No. Calculations run in your browser. There is no account, medical-record upload, or required contact form. Optional condition labels stay in the current page and disappear when it is reloaded.

Where can I get free help with a claim?

A VA-accredited VSO representative can assist without charging a fee. Use our accredited-help guide to reach the official VA resources.
